JPG vs PNG vs WebP: Which Image Format Should You Use?
← Blog · Updated 8 October 2026
The three most common web image formats suit different jobs.
JPG
Best for photos. Files are small and every device and form accepts them. It has no transparency, and quality drops a little each time you re-save it.
PNG
Best for logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges or transparency. It is lossless, so files are larger, especially for photos.
WebP
A modern format that usually makes smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality. It works in modern browsers, but some older programs and forms do not accept it.
Quick guide
- Uploading to a form: JPG.
- Logo or transparent background: PNG.
- Your own website where speed matters: WebP.
- Editing later: PNG.

Questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG keeps the pixels as they are, so the file usually gets bigger while the picture looks the same.
Why does a PNG turn white when I convert it to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas become white.
