What is HEIC, and why will my iPhone photo not open?
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. HEIC keeps good quality in a smaller file, but it is not accepted everywhere. Many websites, job and visa portals, Windows programs, printers and Android phones cannot open it. The simple fix is to convert the photo to JPG, which works almost everywhere.
How to convert HEIC to JPG for free
- Press Select images and choose your iPhone photos, or drop them on the box. You can add up to 30.
- The tool detects the format automatically and shows Detected format: HEIC.
- The iPhone (HEIC) tab is already open. Make sure JPG is chosen and press Convert iPhone Photos. You can also tap a Convert to button right under the photo.
- Download each JPG, or press Download all (ZIP).
Free iPhone photo converter, no login, no limit
Some HEIC converters charge a fee, ask you to sign up, or limit how many photos you can convert for free. EasyTools is free, with no account and no daily limit, and it works the same on a phone or a computer.
Your photos stay on your device
Photos are converted inside your browser. They are not uploaded to our servers. This matters for personal pictures and for photos of documents such as IDs and certificates.
Other ways to avoid HEIC
- Change the iPhone setting: go to Settings, Camera, Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC, so convert those here.
- Convert when sending: some apps convert photos to JPG automatically when you share them, but not all do.
After converting
Many forms also have a size limit. Shrink the JPG with Compress to 100 KB or Compress to 200 KB. Need a PDF? Use Image to PDF, which also accepts HEIC photos. Read our guides: How to convert HEIC to JPG and Why your iPhone photo will not upload.
Questions
What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the photo format iPhones use by default. It keeps good quality in a smaller file, but many websites, forms, Windows apps and Android phones cannot open it.
How do I convert an iPhone photo to JPG?
Select your HEIC photo or drop it on the box. The format is detected automatically. Then press Convert Image with JPG chosen and download the file.
Can I convert many HEIC photos at once?
Yes. Select up to 30 photos together and download them one by one or as a ZIP.
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no login, no watermark and no daily limit. Some converters charge a fee or limit how many photos you can convert for free; this one does not.
Are my iPhone photos uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion happens in your browser, on your own device, so your photos stay private.
Does it work on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac?
Yes. It works in modern browsers such as Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox.
Why does the first HEIC conversion take longer?
Browsers other than Safari need an extra converter, which is loaded only when a HEIC photo is detected. After that it is faster. Very large photos can take a few seconds each.
Will the JPG look the same?
It looks very similar. JPG cannot store everything HEIC can, such as some wide-colour data, but for sharing, forms and uploads the difference is rarely visible.
